Since Childhood we have came across crease on our cotton fabrics and we had also ironed our fabric many times to remove that crease. Did we ever think how this happens mostly in cotton fabric???
DEFINITION Of CREASE
It is defined by many of the Indian and foreigner scientists, one of them I would like to tell you, that is: It is a mark or fold which is permanent until we do some physical activity on it.
Crease generally deteriorates fabric appearance which ultimately decreases its sales and also we lose interest on that fabric unless we press it.
MECHANISM OF CREASING
As we all know, Cotton fabric is made up of cellulose material. Cellulose material has numerous hydrogen bonding in its chemical structure.
As you can see in this figure, many hydrogen are connected by bonds. Though they are not so strong still they help the fabric during load bearing.
Now , during washing , we have to add water. These water molecules make new bonding with the hydrogen and the old hydrogen bonds get break.This happens due to application of water plus pressure.The position of the hydrogen bond changes numerous time during washing.Now, even after the water evaporates the newly formed H-bonds will retain their position.This process is shown in the next figure.
Even after stretching the fabric , it will gain back its position of crease as the new H-bonds have given the fabric strength to retain in this creased position.
HOW IRONING REMOVES CREASE???
When we apply Iron on the cotton fabric with sparkling water, again the newly H-bond breaks and again that old H-bonds will be formed. We again can give the original smooth appearance of the fabric by breaking the new bonds and again obtaining the old ones.This happens only in presence of water, temperature and pressure.
DEVELOPMENTS
Reading the above content , we have come to know that this solution is temporary, because as we will wash , again it will form crease. However, Finishing processes in textile has found out a permanent solution for this. Which I might discuss in subsequent blogs. Until then, tysm for reading :)
